I slowly fell in love with Ne yo's new song 'Miss Independent'. Given that this young man has not miss stepped, so to speak, since starting his public singing career its hard not at some point in time groove to his music.
You may want to hate on the brother but its hard when is music is at the quality that it is.
This song 'Miss Independent' crept up on me. The beautiful and simple melody a base line that you won't be mad to hear at a club makes it a good tune. Now being a serious music woman I then turned to the lyrics to see if I could endorse what they were say.
And while in general lyrics are just another ode to a strong (seemingly black) woman there was a line in the song I have to give Ne yo credit for
Ooh there's something about
Kinda woman that can do for herself
I look at her and it makes me proud
There's something about her
That's a serious line
And it was at that point I was officially sold. All the talk about she can buy this and that for herself to me is nothing compared the compliment that in real life would be for someone to say to a sister "I look at you and you make me proud"
It then became my official anthem and my "get me in a good mood song"
but I got my hopes up.
I should have left it there. I should remembered that the music industry is not trying to liberate or compliment women. That in fact they just trying to make all of us look like porn stars and objectify us.
I started thinking about how beautiful the video could be. Shots of real women working hard and beautiful and strong and natural.
Then I thought to myself let me see the video.
STEUPS!!!!!!
A video filled with long legged, korean headed (long straight or curly), long eye lashed, big breasted, 5'7ish, high brown, soft spoken, sexually aggressive and flirtatious, young type-A women and off course the show girl of that stereotype Miss Gabrielle Union.
To add insult to injury there is their Miss Union's psuedo subtle come on to NeYo
at the end of it.
Would it have really been too much to ask to see even one girl with natural hair? Or one girl who wasn't dressed like if she going for a casting couch audition, in the video.
Don't get me wrong I not a against big boobs and slender legs. I can not hate on who I am or what I look like. and in fact those women my very well be independent
but shit I eh see nobody in that video that look like she does do hard work or over 130lbs or have real breast.
In his song he repeats that "there's soemthing about her". Now I think we all know how to spot that special something in a truely independent woman. That je ne sais quoi that makes sometimes ordinary women shine because they are truely independent.
To me the video is ironic because none of those women have that. They all generically industry-made pretty girls.
How you going to make a video about independent women and none of them resemble what you talking about.
I guess it was just too much to ask.
